In the past, the magic priest (datu) was the highest religious authority in Toba-Batak society. He acted as a mediator between the human world and the supernatural world. In addition to the magic wand (tunggal panaluan, tungkot malehat), the tools he used for fertility, healing, defense and other rituals included a series of containers for magical substances.
This container consists of a decorated buffalo horn and a figuratively carved wooden stopper. The sides of the horn are decorated with a series of human figures in relief. The tip of the horn ends in a seated human figure. The stopper closing the opening of the horn represents the mythical creature singa, who grants protection, with four people sitting on its head and back.
